VANSDA offers a number of targeted employment programs at different times of the year, through partnerships with Federal and Provincial Government departments. While not the case for all, some programs are able to provide living supports (stipends) to participants while the program is in operation. With its varied projects, VANSDA has also led the way in the simultaneous delivery of employment services projects across Nova Scotia through the use of its technology based system linking participants across the province. Many of these programs have on the job placement/ internships providing experience as a core element of the employment process.
Some of the projects run by VANSDA at various times of the year include:
Immigrant Transition to Employment
- With its’ mission to provide employment services to all citizens, while recognizing the needs of those persons that are part of the African Nova Scotian community, VANSDA has proven itself uniquely positioned to expand its employment services to include a more direct and focused integration program for the increasing numbers of immigrants residing as permanent residents of the Annapolis Valley.
- As the lead organization, VANSDA works with other community partners to provide/ determine the appropriate mix of additional services within the project timeframe, that will best ease the transition to life within the region and to promote active citizenship in the community.
Pre-Employment Essential Skills
- The Pre-Employment Essential Skills program allows participants the opportunity to gain skills for specific work as well as provide the basis for work in general. Utilizing a module based curriculum throughout the process, the program offers a variety of professional development opportunities such as: career decision making, resume development, self-marketing, employment maintenance, workplace etiquette, time management, etc.
- Participants will exit the program better prepared to maintain consistent and fulfilling employment.
Age Advantage Plus
- The Age Advantage Plus program is a Federal / Provincial initiative designed to meet the needs of citizens between 55 and 65 trying to re-enter the labour force or increase their skill sets to allow them to stay competitive in the job market. This program focusses on assisting mature workers attaining the necessary skills to remain viable options for employers filling employment needs.
- Topics covered during this program include:
- Overcoming challenges – race, age and technology based
- Creating a personal vision
- Making a living in the 21st century
- Focusing Your job search
- Marketing yourself
- Creating opportunities through self-employment
- Skills Development is a provincially managed employment program that provides financial assistance to unemployed eligible participants who require specific training to access employment opportunities.
Essential Skills and Workplace Education
- The Government of Canada has identified the nine essential skills needed for the workplace. These skills are used in every job and at different levels of complexity. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. The Essential Skills Program provides an intensive learning environment for those job ready employment seekers to refresh their knowledge base.
Youth Skills Link
- The Youth Skills Link program is a component of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES). Through funding to organizations, the Skills Link program helps youth overcome barriers to employment, develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in order to participate in the current and future labour market and to promote education and skills as being key to labour market participation. These barriers include, but are not limited to, challenges faced by recent immigrant youth, youth with disabilities, single parent youth, youth who have not completed high school, Indigenous youth, and youth living in rural or remote areas.
