‘Bridging The Gap- The Road To Employment Equity’ Conference
The Valley African Nova Scotian Development Association (VANSDA) will host ‘Bridging the Gap- The Road to Employment Equity’ Conference Nov. 4th & 5th 2019 at the Halifax Convention Centre. The event marks the 2nd time VANSDA has undertaken a large provincial conference effort, with the first being held in 2004 titled: ‘Moving Forward in Nova Scotia – Making Employment Equity Work for You’. With attendance from across the employment spectrum in the province (employer, service provider & government) we hope to repeat the large turnout for this important conversation.
It is unmistakable that since 2004 the process of collective problem solving has devolved into independent silos of problem solving which has led to designated marginalized groups taking further steps backward in the efforts to obtain and retain sustainable employment options.
Minority communities in particular, account for disproportionate shares of unemployed or underemployed Nova Scotians. This under utilization narrows unnecessarily the province’s pool of high-performing talent and provides no help to employers’ eager to tap new demographic groups in their increasingly fierce fight for hard-to-find hires. In addition, statistically the birth rate for these communities is higher than in the general population, meaning they “represent a important potential source of young new entrants to the labour force.”
VANSDA see these effort as another important step fulfilling its mission to improve the quality of life for African Nova Scotians and other marginalized persons by creating Partnerships in Employment, Training and Government/ Economic Development. We continue to maintain our focus on increasing employment opportunities and the environment which will lead to employment retention and advancement for racially visible minorities and others.
