Provincial Development Communications Officer

The Coalition is an open group of individuals and organizations that serve African Nova Scotian people, communities, interests and needs. The group’s members recognize that the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) presents a unique opportunity to build provincial, national and international momentum for change that will benefit people of African descent in Nova Scotia and beyond. Recognizing that African Nova Scotians are a distinct founding people in Nova Scotia who have been a key part of the province’s culture and history since 1605, the DPAD Coalition’s mission is twofold: to build strength and health across African Nova Scotian communities and to forge a renewed working relationship with government that creates conditions for all African-descended people in Nova Scotia to thrive. We seek a relationship where African Nova Scotians are engaged, included and listened to, at all levels of policy shaping and decision making. We also seek to strengthen relationships amongst ourselves to equip communities and organizations to work collectively and holistically across sectors, in an accountable and mutually supportive way.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a community liaison that will work collaboratively with staff and membership to build trust and nurture new and old relationships with the African Nova Scotia Community
  • Schedule provincial outreach reports on DPAD’s work to the community twice yearly (spring and fall) as well as create and provide presentations.
  • Work with the community to develop a list report on pressing issues for each community. This report will contribute to DPAD’s action plan and update our communication strategy
  • Attend meetings as needed.
  • Write and distribute email, correspondence memos, help develop semi-annual reports.
  • Manage our online presence website Facebook page, and other social media accounts and support to find creative way to better engage youth across the province.
  • Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, including community events, workshops, appearances and other communication opportunities with our members.
  • Assist in the organization of special events, including donor/volunteer appreciation events and other initiatives.
  • Attend monthly meetings and report to members on the status of our communications strategy.
  • Responsible for creation and upkeep of communications binder for working groups and media
  • Support office with administrative duties as needed
Qualifications:
  • Experience working with African Nova Scotian communities and organizations
  • Knowledge of DPAD’s operations, mission, vision, and current work
  • Knowledge of African Nova Scotian history, communities, and issues of concern
  • Proficiency if social media
  • Working knowledge of office equipment, like printers and fax machines
  • Proficiency in Outlook, MS Office (Excel and PowerPoint, in particular)
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to building and maintaining relationships; effective communication; ethical behaviour; organization and planning; problem-solving; solution-focused
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of communities and people
  • Bachelor’s Degree Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or a related field and 3 years experience or other training and at least 7 years’ experience.  A current student in a related field may be considered.
Note:  Normal weekday office hours (10:00 am - 3:30 pm), occasional evenings and
  • weekends, as well as some travel is required.
  • This is a term position (September 1st, 2020 – March 31, 2023) with the possibility of term being extended.
